Summary

Starts off as Gutts looking like a good guy, who cannot stand tyranny。 We learn eventually that he is a self-serving wanderer whose interests conveniently align with Vargas。 Not that he cares about Vargas, it is about the Behelit and killing the evil Count。The artwork never ceases to amaze me though。

Well, it's a number of things。 First of all, and this is likely something that is more intertwined with manga than traditional Western comics, but there isn't much storytelling throughout the first volume。 Or rather, story telling through words。 There are far more panels with no words, than with。 I always wax lyrical here about world building, and lore, and above all, telling a compelling story。 Well, whilst I don't dispute the power a picture has to transcend language at times。 It happens far too much here for my liking, and with what are usually, overly bloated, difficult to follow fight scenes。 To me, it is always the lead up to a fight scene, and the aftermath where the true power of a story is。 Berserk Volume one seems to do the exact opposite of this, with very little in the way of a build or follow up, and instead, we get page, after page, after page, of fight scenes, which Ii frequently struggled to tell exactly what was going on half the time。 Maybe its me needing to get used to the more anime style of fight artwork in manga, or maybe Miura just wasn't quite bringing his A game yet (as some of the other artwork would testify too, but I found it all rather confusing and unrewarding。 but most of all, the thing I liked the least about this book is … Puck! that's right, that annoying little character, used as an annoying narrative device and the supposed heart, and comic relief to the story。 I say supposed, as nothing he ever said or did was anything more than god awful, and a detriment to whatever was occurring around him。 Yes, it clearly lends itself to a more Japanese sensibility than mine, at least。 But this loathsome little so and so was something I would much rather have seen as small eraser particles, blown off the page and left on the floor。Despite all that, Miura clearly had an idea where he was going with this story, even if it does seem somewhat disjointed and aimless early on。 Though you can't exactly skip this volume, as some of the characters and events here play a role at the start of the second volume, and perhaps even further。 It certainly makes for a tiresome beginning to what could ultimately be, something rather spectacular。 Chalk this one up to a rough start, although one that will pay off rather quickly, as soon as you open Deluxe Volume 2。 3/5OmniBen。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 Good continuation of the story from the first volume, however I found the action sequences harder to follow in this one。

The story picks up more here and the artwork is quite amazing, especially the detailed illustrations of the Daemon。

Que buenos personajes coño。 La trama va muy bien, y parece haber mucho lore。

Bryan

A high-action volume with tantalizing worldbuilding tidbits that promise wider story-examination and characterization to come。 Gothic horror elements sidle up close and comfortable with the dark fantasy ones as Guts seeks to end the demonic Count。

I will never not be blown away by the art in this series。 This volume is a step up from the first。 The battle with The Count is awesome。 So much of this is left out of the manga。 The imagery is beyond disturbing。

4 stars for Puck and his humanity

Kierra

The book has alot of fighting and gore and it seems to take attention away from the main plot。 This volume does do an excellent job as protraying what an excellent swordman Guts is and shows the power of the sword well。 The art for the battle between Guts and the Count Slug was amazing。

I felt this volume’s artwork was an improvement over the first。 The backgrounds are more detailed and the action is more fluid。 It was also great to see the more subtle aspects of Guts that we only had a glimpse of in the first volume。 His compassion and empathy was more apparent。Giving the Count apostle a shred of humanity through his devotion of his daughter added an extra layer of subtle complexity as well。 Berserk can only get stronger from here。

Ryan O'Laughlin

Great art, but the whole volume is a bridge between volumes 1 and 3。

First 2 volumes are trash to be completely honest, the real masterpiece starts at the Golden Age Arc。

The best in class dark medieval fantasy anime/manga continues with the endless onslaught of demons and those who serve them。 Beautiful (and extremely grotesque/gory) art。 Extremely creative and unique main villain within this volume。 Truly the stuff of nightmares。 And as always, no matter how much blood Guts has lost, no matter how much of a beating he has taken。。。 he just keeps on coming。 Can't wait to see what happens next!
